Carpe Diem

258 pounds. Here are a few comparisons for ya:

A female deer.

A manhole cover. Who knew? Never tried to lift one before.

A black bear. A FREAKING BEAR PEOPLE!

Shaq. O.k. Maybe not. But too close for comfort.

We were here with the kids on a Saturday evening in 2006. I was trying to fit my caboose (yepers, that 248 pound caboose I referenced earlier) into a train car. Our oldest was still a little to short to ride alone. Uncomfortable and ready for the ride to be over, I saw a young girl (probably in her early 20's) run through the park. She. Looked. Fantastic. To this day, I still have no idea who she is. But, she will always have a special place in my life. Funny how we might influence somebody and never know it?

The following Monday evening after dinner, I went to get dressed. In workout clothes. For the first time in two years. Now, just a reminder. I played college basketball. I worked out every day from the age of 12 until I graduated from college. Then...I got married. Then...I had kids. Then...I forgot about myself.
I walked out from getting dressed and told the hubby I was going on a run. His response: laughter. I never thought he was being mean. Still don't today. He just didn't think I could do it. How the heck could you blame him?
I ran (use the term 'ran' loosely. it was more of a hop.). I couldn't breath. I was home in 10 minutes. But I ran/hopped. Whatever you want to call it.
Since then, I have lost 90 pounds. I lost 90 pounds without starving myself. Get real people. Do you honestly think that really works? I lost 90 pounds withOUT a trainer who pushes me to puke level everyday. I lost 90 pounds without joining some girly health club (or a scanky one---you know which gym you are! Shame on you!). I lost 90 pounds by simply exercising. Wow. I should write a book. It could be called, "Exercising is good for you."
I have made a change in my life for the better. And surprisingly, it wasn't all that bad. Because of this, I am a better mother, a better wife, a better thinker (even though some of my thinking during the day as a SAHM is, "What should I eat now?" or "How the *%@* am I going to get 8 miles in on the treadmill with three kiddos running around?") and a better competitor. Where these individuals meet is where this blog will converge.
A special shout out to any runners/mommmy runners/wanna be mommy runners out there: You want to share your expertise with me/other momners (get it?mommy+runners=momners)? I think your posts would spice this blog up a bit.

Love it, Jessica! You're amazing. I ran my three miles this morning and thought how amazing it is that you're running a marathon. Good luck with your cram-training.
I don't know how you're fitting it in. But more to the point, I don't know how you're fitting in the family blog, your blog, this blog, and FB. Now THAT'S worth commendation.

Hey Jess I read on Facebook that my friend from high school (who moved to Maple Grove last year) started a running blog too. She is preparing for the Duluth marathon as well. You should check out her blog and links-- http://bittenbytherunningbug.blogspot.com
And by the way, I want proof about the bear comparison, I don't buy it!

Jessica,

I love your humor, its just so clever and fun. You know how some people just look like a model and you can't but assume thats the way they were born, and thats the way they will die? Well thats you. :) I am amazed at your accomplishment, what an inspiration! But more than anything I love the kinda mom you tick your tock. I loved getting the inside scoops on that with Katelynn being in my class, its like I was a fly on the wall and every 'share' time in class I learned something else fun you did for/with the kids... in health and happiness, Emily.
